Lit in 1858, Bass Harbor Head Light, a 32’ tower with a focal point of 56’ assisted mariners in navigating Bass Harbor and marked the entrance to Blue Hill Bay.

The stone lighthouse on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor was the first built in the New England Colonies and lighted in 1716. The British left a trail of gunpowder that blew up the lighthouse and hour after their departure following the American Revolution. The tower rebuilt in 1783, is the last officially staffed lighthouse in the United States.

In 1875, Congress authorized $10,000 to build a fog signal at Castle Hill as an aid to mariners making their way through the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. Unfortunately, the renowned Harvard Professor and Zoologist Alexander Aggasiz built a summer home on the proposed site a year earlier and refused to sell. Landowners in the Castle Hill area banded together in opposition of a fog bell sounding on their “doorstep.” (Lighted)

As commercial shipping on Lake Ontario increased toward the end of the eighteenth century, navigational aids and safe harbors became a serious concern. In 1805 Congress officially established a port at the entrance to the Genesee River. Since the river was partially blocked by sandbars and the port was surrounded by marshlands, a lighthouse was deemed absolutely necessary for safe passage into the river.

When Chatham Light was first built on Cape Cod in 1808, it was actually twin lighthouses, in an effort to distinguish the new beacon from nearby Highland Light. The first sentinels were 40 feet high and set 70 feet apart. They were built of wood, with a small dwelling for keepers.

After a fierce storm ravaged the Portland Harbor area in 1831, officials saw the need for not only a breakwater to protect the town, but also a lighthouse to guide mariners to safety through the uncharted waters. Construction began immediately.
In 1836 the breakwater and lighthouse began to take shape. The completion of the new additions was halted because of a lack of funds. But in 1854 construction began again and once the breakwater was finished, the lighthouse was erected. It was a small, octagonal tower, complete with a Sixth Order Fresnel Lens.

The Rose Island Lighthouse was built atop a circular bastion on the remains of Fort Hamilton. Located at the southern tip of the island, the fortification dates back to the British occupation of Newport during the Revolutionary War. After the Revolution a brilliant French engineer and war hero, Louis Tousard, fortified the stonework.
Construction of the brick and wood lighthouse began in 1869 to guide mariners into Narragansett Bay. Designed with a mansard roof, patterned slate shingles and ornate window and door trimmings, the sentinel was an architectural masterpiece. On January 20, 1870 the light was illuminated for the first time. Magnified by a Sixth Order Fresnel Lens, the light had a fifty-foot focal plane, the fixed red beacon was visible for six nautical miles. Fifteen years later a fog bell was installed.
