Back in 1721, Alexander Spotswood – governor of the Virginia colony for the British – had an idea for a lighthouse to be built at Cape Henry, but it was 1774 before the colonies of Virginia and Maryland agreed to construct it. Materials were brought to the site and work began, but the funds ran out and the Revolutionary War put the project on hold.

Suspended above the bay, at the mouth of the Patuxent River, was a spindly-legged sentinel flashing its warning beacon to shipping vessels. Standing at a particular perilous shoal, near the north entrance, the Drum Point Light served mariners for close to eighty years.

In the early part of the Nineteenth Century, coastal shipping, along with inbound traffic from Europe, increased dramatically in the Delaware Bay. As ships made their way into the Bay, they were faced with a deadly obstacle, the Fenwick Shoals, lying just off Fenwick Island. Mariners complained bitterly that there were no lighted navigational aids to guide them safely into the Bay.

Chesapeake Bay, the picturesque waterway that meanders from
the Atlantic to divide Virginia and Maryland, is dotted with treacherous islands
and outcroppings that have proved a nightmare passage for mariners over the
centuries. At the top of Tangier Sound lies Hooper Strait, a narrow channel
between rugged islands, and often the site of raging storms, thick fogs and more
than a few mishaps.

In 1889 Congress appropriated $20,000 for the purchase of land near Squan Inlet (now Manasquan Inlet) for a much-needed lighthouse. The section of the coast now called the Sea Girt Inlet was originally known as Wreck Pond; a name appropriately assigned to the site where an estimated 92 vessels were shipwrecked during the early 1890’s. It was not until 1896 that the land was purchased and construction began. The beacon would light up the 40-mile blind spot between Navesink Twin Lights and Barnegat Light.

When it comes to atmosphere for lighthouse lovers, a visit to Baltimore’s fantastic harbor district has it all!
You can sit at the base of Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse and enjoy a seafood dinner, as you admire its unique architecture. Now set on Pier 5 of Baltimore’s beautiful Inner Harbor, Seven Foot Knoll is a maritime museum that enables lighthouse enthusiasts to tour the sentinel and learn about its proud heritage.
Seven Foot Knoll went into service in 1855 and was the second screw pile lighthouse to be constructed on Chesapeake Bay. It was situated at the mouth of the Patapsco River, an area known for its treacherous wakes, and was equipped with a fourth order Fresnel lens.

Bill Younger selected Thomas Point Maryland as the first in the
'Signature Series' from Harbour Lights. He has fond memories of seeing this
beautiful screwpile sentinel for the first time as a child, while fishing with
his uncle on the Chesapeake Bay. Bill imagined what it must have been like for
keepers living in this isolated offshore station. His memory of this 'Jewel of
the Chesapeake' provided the inspiration that eventually became Harbour
Lights
