Little Lights - Point Arena Lighthouse, CA

Little Lights - Point Arena Lighthouse, CA

Officials lighted the lantern for the first time in 1870 and built a two-story Gothic dwelling large enough to house four Lightkeepers and their families.  The 1906 San Franscisco earthquake damaged the tower beyond repair, so engineers rebuilt the sentinel with reinforced concrete instead of brick to withstand strong tremors.

Little Lights - Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, OR

Little Lights - Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, OR

Officials built the Yaquina Bay lighthouse to warn mariners of a perilous outcropping that had a rich magnetic vein at its center, causing compasses to go haywire.  In fact, before the lighthouse was illuminated, so many vessels sank that locals built handholds in the rocks so that shipwrecked sailors could climb to safety.
