Harbour Lights GLOW - Amelia Island Lighthouse, FL - Lighted

Harbour Lights GLOW - Amelia Island Lighthouse, FL - Lighted
The beautiful Amelia Island lies at the entrance to St. Mary’s River, at Florida’s northernmost point. Although similar in size to Manhattan, only 10,000 people actually live here today. In the early days, Amelia attracted a rather unsavory crowd of smugglers, pirates and slave traders. Eventually, the mosquito infested island and its principle town, Fernandina Beach, developed into an important trading center for lumber, phosphate, shrimp and military supplies.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Bald Head, NC

Harbour Lights GLOW - Bald Head, NC
At the southernmost point of North Carolina’s chain of barrier islands lies a place of remarkable beauty - Bald Head Island. Legendary in the maritime world, its ever-changing geography adds to its splendor, as well as its danger. Before the advancements of technology, American settlers had only maps, compasses and rudimentary light markers to use when approaching Cape Fear River. If you add-in rapidly forming (and disappearing) shoals, it’s amazing that ships were able to make it through at all.

Harbour LIghts GLOW - Biloxi Lighthouse, MS (Lighted)

Harbour LIghts GLOW - Biloxi Lighthouse, MS (Lighted)
In 1847, Mississippi Representative Jefferson Davis brought forward legislation that would fund the construction of three lighthouses on the Mississippi Sound. At the same time, the Fifth Auditor of the Treasury, Stephen Pleasonton, announced he intended “to put a Cast Iron Light House at Biloxi and this will prove the utility which they may be of.” It was the determination of these two men that brought Biloxi Light into reality. Harbour Lights GLOW - Cape Canaveral, FL

Harbour Lights GLOW - Cape Canaveral, FL
Since 1868, this famous sentinel has guided ships away from Cape Canaveral's dangerous shoals. In 1894, the 145 tower was dismantled and reassembled further inland. Automated since 1960, the lighthouse has sometimes been mistaken for a rocket ship by launch observers at the Kennedy Space Center.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Cape Hatteras, NC

Harbour Lights GLOW - Cape Hatteras, NC
Cape Hatteras, beloved by lighthouse lovers aroun the nation, is a symbol of our nation’s maritime heritage and one of the most recognized lighthouses in the world. The arduous task of moving this beacon back from the tumulus waters of the Outer Banks was seemingly an impossible task, yet determination and perseverance made for a successful relocation and a historic moment in time.

From the beginning, dedicated individuals and preservation groups had brought the possible plight of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to the forefront of media attention. These proactive lighthouse lovers fought battles as the entire nation debated the best course of action. Once the decision had been made to relocate the sentinel, the teetering task of moving the tower was underway. A nation held its breath as the International Chimney Corp. inched the lighthouse back from the turning waters, just as two potentially devastating hurricanes swept the North Carolina coast. Many speculate that the move came just in time, as the hurricanes could have potentially undermined the foundation of Cape Hatteras and tumbled it into the ocean.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Cape Lookout, NC

Harbour Lights GLOW - Cape Lookout, NC
The majestic beauty of North Carolina’s Outer Banks is infamous to nature lovers, historians and mariners. The very same features that make the area picturesque - jagged headlands and sandy shoals - give rise to treacherous waterways. At the south end of the Core Banks lies Cape Lookout, with its notorious Lookout shoals and a historic sentinel.

To warn mariners of the hazards of the “Horrible Headlands”, officials petitioned for a lighthouse in early 1800, completing the tower in 1812. Workers erected a brick sentinel and encased it with a wooden exterior. Then, to make the structure stand out against the sandy beaches, green vegetation and blue sky, painters encircled the tower with red and white horizontal stripes. As a daymark, Cape Lookout was a smashing hit. But in the early morning or late afternoon hours of misty fog, the beacon was all but obscured. Mariners complained of almost running aground because they couldn’t see the light.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Cockspur Island, GA - Lighted

Harbour Lights GLOW - Cockspur Island, GA - Lighted
Imagine a “lighthouse” with no light! Such was the case when a brick, lightless beacon was constructed on Cockspur Island – which lies at the entrance to the Savannah River – between 1837 and 1839. It was converted to a real lighthouse in 1849, boasting five lamps with 14-inch reflectors at a focal plane of 25-feet above sea level and visible for nine nautical miles. Lying in the path of a coastal hurricane, the lighthouse was rebuilt in 1857 and outfitted with a Fourth Order Fresnel Lens in the 46-foot tower.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Currituck, NC

Harbour Lights GLOW - Currituck, NC

W.J. Tate, keeper of Currituck Beach Light, received an unusual letter one day while tending his duties. His wife, the postmistress in Kitty Hawk, brought him his mail, noting the name on the return address - Wilbur and Orville Wright.

With curiosity, he opened the letter, revealing a correspondence from the legendary brothers. The two aerial pioneers were requesting information about the local topography, curious about the birds-eye view from the tower.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Hillsboro Inlet, FL

Harbour Lights GLOW - Hillsboro Inlet, FL
When Congress recognized the need for a lighthouse at Hillsboro Inlet in 1901, they planned for a massive skeletal tower to guide vessels approaching the narrow bay. What they didn’t know is that the lighthouse, gracing the shores near Pompano Beach, would become one of America’s jewels - warming the hearts of lighthouse lovers across the nation.

After completion in Detroit in 1906, the iron sentinel was shipped to Florida. It made its way through Lake Erie, down Lake Michigan, onto the Mississippi River, over the Gulf of Mexico and around Key West until it reached its final destination, 4,000 miles away. The pre-assembled tower was set atop six huge iron piles. This was accompanied by five buildings made for the Head Keeper and his two assistants to use.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Jupiter Inlet, FL

Harbour Lights GLOW - Jupiter Inlet, FL

Palm Beach County, Florida has a long-time resident who’s been around in good times and bad. This local has witnessed the ravages of war, hurricanes of incredible magnitude and disease. Jupiter Inlet, Florida, has seen it all.

Established in 1860, Jupiter Inlet took several years to build. Workers painstakingly hauled the materials over many miles, enduring the sweltering heat and persistent insects. Construction was halted twice because of an attack by the local Seminole Indians and because workers became ill after catching a raging illness aptly named Jupiter Fever. Despite these setbacks, the lighthouse was finally illuminated with its bright 1st order Fresnel lens. After only one year in service, the light was extinguished.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Morris Island Lighthouse, SC - Lighted

Harbour Lights GLOW - Morris Island Lighthouse, SC - Lighted
Builders erected Split Rock Lighthouse atop a shear 170-foot cliff, with the broad expanse of Lake Superior spreading below.  Keepers and their families were dropped off by steamer in April and would remain at their posts until December, when the lake would freeze over again.

Standing in the waters off Folly Beach, an old, weathered sentinel appears. Resting precariously on a tiny plot of eroded shoal, Morris Island Light is a reminder of a grand era in American maritime history.

The lighthouse was completed in 1876. It was the second lighthouse to be built on the island. The necessity of a lighthouse first came about because of the shifting channel and a change in tidal currents. As sand began to build up between the islands it resulted in the three neighboring islands merging into one single island. This one island was named Morrison Island and later changed to Morris Island. The first lighthouse was a casualty of the Civil War, blown up during battle.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Oak Island Lighthouse, NC - Lighted

Harbour Lights GLOW - Oak Island Lighthouse, NC - Lighted
Illuminating the entrance to the Cape Fear River, Oak Island Lighthouse is the most brilliant beacon in the United States.

Officials realized that a lighthouse on Oak Island was crucial in safely guiding mariners to the Cape Fear River entrance.  Completed in 1958, Oak Island Lighthouse was the first sentinel built in the area in 54 years.

Using the Swedish-developed "moving slip" form, workers erected a solid 169-foot tower of eight-inch reinforced concrete.  Builders poured concrete into the form and once it dried, moved the form up to complete another section.

The walls are merely eight inches thick from bottom to top, unlike older brick lighthouses that were several bricks deep at the base and tapered to the top.  The gray color bands are integrated into the concrete, so the tower never needs painting.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Ocracoke Lighthouse, NC - Lighted

Harbour Lights GLOW - Ocracoke Lighthouse, NC - Lighted
The Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest active lighthouse in North Carolina and the second oldest operating lighthouse in the nation. The original light, built in 1803 on Shell Castle Island, was struck by lightening five years later, and burned to the ground. A new site was chosen, the fishing village of Ocracoke in the Pamlico Sound. During the early 1700’s Ocracoke Island was the home of the notorious Blackbeard the Pirate, where he was eventually beheaded. Legend says that his ghost still haunts the area!

In 1823, at a cost of $11,360 the tower, including a one story, one bedroom light keeper’s house was constructed. A second story was added onto the house in 1897 and another section was added in 1929. The double keepers’ quarters still stand on the site today, along with a generator house, originally used for storing the whale oil.

Harbour Lights GLOW - Port Isabel Lighthouse, TX - Lighted

Harbour Lights GLOW - Port Isabel Lighthouse, TX - Lighted
The beginning of Port Isabel Light was anything but ordinary. Congress appropriated $15,000 for a lighthouse and beacon light at Brazos, Santiago after Fort Polk was abandoned. The tower was completed in 1852 and was lit by four lamps, 57 feet above the ground. In 1857 a Third Order Fresnel Lens was installed with a fixed, flashing light.

Following the Civil War, the light station was overhauled, refitted and relit. The tower leaked very badly and by 1879 it was impossible to keep the lens and lamps dry during heavy rains. So in 1881, a new iron lantern was erected, illuminated by mineral oil lamps. But in 1887, a question as to whether the United States had rightful title to the land on which the light sat, caused the light to be discontinued and the station was abandoned.
